About Me
My name is Terry Schmitt. I live in Neptune Beach, FL (Jacksonville) and I'm a married father with a great wife and daughter.
After a 10 year stint in the US Navy, I was hired by CSC, in San Diego, and have been with them for 10 years and am now a Senior Application Developer. I've actually been involved with the same customer for those 10 years. My career at CSC has been interesting. I really created my position there and basically have the freedom to create solutions that streamline our operations. Most of my solutions involve ColdFusion as the application server, although I have implemented some pretty large off-the-shelf systems as well. I primarily have focused on the Windows platform using various Windows Servers with MS SQL Server with some handheld programming thrown in for good measure. I'm a one-man-band, so I wear several hats. That's good in some ways, as it give me broad experience, but sometimes I wish that I could really focus more on ColdFusion. I try to focus on using Linux and MySQL for my after-hours activities.
I've been working remotely from home for 5 years and haven't been back to the office in that time! Cabin fever sets in every now and again, but all in all, it has worked out well.
My primary focus is with ColdFusion and that is what I love doing. I started with Cold Fusion 2.0 and now work with 5.0 and 8.0. I also dabble with the BlueDragon and Railo alternatives and am pretty excited about both products becoming opensource.
I manage to find interests everywhere that I live and I run, for exercise, no matter where I'm at. In San Diego, I really loved riding dirt bikes. My last steed was a KTM 200MXC, which was an awesome ride. There were so many places to ride in California. Desert, mountains, tracks... I also flew radio controlled gliders, which was entertaining. Here in Jacksonville, I ride my BMW R1150GS, although for the past year, I've spent more and more time sailing. I currently own and race a Flying Scot one-design sailboat. I crew on bigger boats on occasion, as well.
Life is good. I thrive on challenges and hate repetition! Monotony sucks! Throwing me a challenging new project is what makes my brain tick.
I started this blog really as a place for my own notes, but believe that sharing is what makes the CF Community work. I receive so much education from others that share their thoughts, that I figured I'd better do the same. I'm definitely not the prolific writer like some in the CF community, but my goal is to write more and more as time passes and hope that others can benefit.
